Forklift Inspection Checklist in Ontario

by Carllaen Joshua Gonzales 30 Mar 2024 0 Comments

According to Ontario's Ministry of Labor and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA) clause 25(1)(b), a powered forklift truck must be inspected on a regular basis, including the beginning of shift and before each use. This is to make sure that the equipment is in good working condition and is guaranteed to meet the safety standards. Regulation 851 clause 51(1)(b) mandates that a permanent record of this inspection must be kept on file.

In order to help you comply with these regulations, this forklift guide will provide you with a comprehensive forklift inspection checklist for both propane and electric forklifts in Ontario. Read below to learn more!

  1. Exterior Inspection - Examine the body of the forklift and look for any damage, such as dents or cracks. Verify that the forks have no wear or tears on them and that the tires are properly inflated.
  2. Fluid Levels - Check the propane tank for any leaks, damage, or loose connections. Make that the pressure release valve is working and that there is sufficient fuel for the operation. Additionally, be sure to check the levels of the hydraulic fluid and add extra as needed.
  3. Controls and Operation - Run a test to make sure that all controls, such as the lifting mechanisms, brakes, and steering, are operating as intended. Additionally, confirm that all of the safety features—such as the emergency stop button, horns, and lights—are operational and in good working order.

  4. Emissions and Exhaust - Inspect the exhaust system for any sign of wear, damage, or leaks. Verify that the exhaust pipe is clear of obstructions, the muffler is firmly attached, and it is correctly vented. Check that there are no strange smells or smoke, and that the emissions match legal requirements.
